Most homes have a corner that nobody uses: beside a window, at the end of a sofa, under the stairs. Give it one job, and it becomes the place you look forward to at the end of the day.

Start with the Chair

Pick a chair you can sink into with your knees up: cane, linen or wool, low rather than tall. Turn it slightly towards the light, not square to the wall. A chair at an angle feels like an invitation.

One Lamp, Low and Warm

Overhead light flattens a room. A floor lamp beside the chair, or a candle on a low table, puts the light where your hands are and leaves the rest of the room soft. In the evening, light a taper and let it be the only flame.

Something That Grows, or Once Did

A single stem of pampas or a dried palm in a stoneware vase gives the corner height without clutter. It needs no water and no care, and it moves a little when the window is open.

Texture Under Your Feet and Hands

A woven basket for the book you are reading and the throw you will need later. A cushion in washed linen, because linen gets softer every time it is used.

Leave It Unfinished

Resist the urge to fill the corner. The space around the chair is part of the calm. If you add something, take something away.
